We entered Indonesia in 1968 to establish CKD assembly operations, and over
the course of 40 years we have built up a firm track record. We have positioned
Indonesia as one of our top-priority markets, and are committed to making
investments, developing human resources, and promoting localization efforts
there. This commitment to the Indonesian market has enabled us to build a
relationship of trust with local suppliers and dealers.
The Indonesia-specific Ayla model (sold as the “Agya” by Toyota) incorporates
technologies and knowhow found in our Japanese mini vehicle, the Mira e:S. In
addition, the global A-segment platform, which we developed using our mini
vehicle technologies, has evolved in a manner that is optimal for both
countries.
The key to achieving comprehensive cost reductions and high quality, both of which are indispensable to our method of vehicle manufacture, lies in our independently developed production technologies. Daihatsu Motor Kyushu Co., Ltd.’s Oita (Nakatsu) Plant 2, which commenced operations in 2007, is a model plant that uses the SSC concept of “simple, slim and compact” to simplify its facilities and integrate its work processes.
In Indonesia, Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) utilizes a production system that incorporates a version of the Japanese SSC concept which has been optimally adapted to the local market. By expanding the SSC concept overseas, Daihatsu has been able to develop the approach that underpins high-quality Japanese manufacturing to suit the local environment. More specifically, ADM has adopted Quality Gate—a system which, instead of sending defective products downstream, stops the line and fixes the defect there and then—and has established a bright, quiet and comfortable working environment that includes measures to combat the heat.

The No.1 share of Indonesian automobile production in
FY2017
Including consigned production, Daihatsu produced 500,000 vehicles in
FY2017, and is the largest automobile manufacturer in Indonesia. In order to
promote local development, we have also established an R&D Center at the
Karawang Assembly Plant, which commenced operations in October 2012. The center
is equipped with the first automobile test course in Indonesia.
