Overview of Indonesia

We entered Indonesia in 1968 to establish CKD assembly operations, and over the course of 40 years we have built up a firm track record. We have positioned Indonesia as one of our top-priority markets, and are committed to making investments, developing human resources, and promoting localization efforts there. This commitment to the Indonesian market has enabled us to build a relationship of trust with local suppliers and dealers.

The Indonesia-specific Ayla model (sold as the “Agya” by Toyota) incorporates technologies and knowhow found in our Japanese mini vehicle, the Mira e:S. In addition, the global A-segment platform, which we developed using our mini vehicle technologies, has evolved in a manner that is optimal for both countries.

The key to achieving comprehensive cost reductions and high quality, both of which are indispensable to our method of vehicle manufacture, lies in our independently developed production technologies. Daihatsu Motor Kyushu Co., Ltd.’s Oita (Nakatsu) Plant 2, which commenced operations in 2007, is a model plant that uses the SSC concept of “simple, slim and compact” to simplify its facilities and integrate its work processes.

In Indonesia, Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) utilizes a production system that incorporates a version of the Japanese SSC concept which has been optimally adapted to the local market. By expanding the SSC concept overseas, Daihatsu has been able to develop the approach that underpins high-quality Japanese manufacturing to suit the local environment. More specifically, ADM has adopted Quality Gate—a system which, instead of sending defective products downstream, stops the line and fixes the defect there and then—and has established a bright, quiet and comfortable working environment that includes measures to combat the heat.

The No.1 share of Indonesian automobile production in FY2017
Including consigned production, Daihatsu produced 500,000 vehicles in FY2017, and is the largest automobile manufacturer in Indonesia. In order to promote local development, we have also established an R&D Center at the Karawang Assembly Plant, which commenced operations in October 2012. The center is equipped with the first automobile test course in Indonesia.

Overview of Malaysia

Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd.PERODUA, a national car manufacturer established through the joint investment of the Malaysian government and Daihatsu, commenced operations in 1993.

In August 2014, we launched a new vehicle named the Axia, the first EEV in Malaysia with a low fuel consumption of 21.6 km/L* (5MT) made possible through the use of the e:S Technology. We involved local staff in Malaysia in the development of the Axia, which enabled us to deliver the high product appeal and outstanding quality of vehicle that reflected the needs of local customer. We were also able to offer the vehicle at an affordable price, thanks to thorough structural reforms that were made.

The Axia gained widespread popularity as the first compact car to comply with EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle), the Malaysian government’s eco-car policy. It is a model that aims to be internationally competitive following the liberalization of trade by AFTA and TPP.

For PGMSB, where the Axia is produced, we have applied the SSC concept cultivated at the Daihatsu Motor Kyushu Oita (Nakatsu) Plant 2, our mother plant, in a way that best fits the conditions in Malaysia. Here we created a culture of vehicle production from scratch that emphasizes a high level of quality and a climate of discipline. The staff members are all new, and some of them are being groomed to become future leaders. When we developed the Axia, we involved the local staff in each phase, from planning and R&D to the procurement of parts and supplies. This enabled us to develop the Axia in a short amount of time and make it internationally competitive in terms of cost and quality.
The No.1 share of the Malaysian automobile market for 11 years in a row (2006–2016)*
Perodua, the national car manufacturer established through the joint investment of the Malaysian government and Daihatsu, is steadily expanding its business and boasts the leading share of the automobile market in Malaysia for 11 years in succession. In order to strengthen its international competitiveness, Perodua intends to continue improving its business structure and reducing costs.

Daihatsu Pursues Fuel Efficiency

Japan

A leading manufacturer of compact cars, Daihatsu pursues fuel efficiency, affordable prices and eco-friendliness

Daihatsu aims to produce attractive cars that are fuel efficient, affordable, and eco-friendly. In FY2015, the company sold 585,000 mini vehicles in Japan, and secured the number one share of the mini vehicle market for the 10th year in succession. At Daihatsu, we believe that these results are a consequence of the outstanding product appeal of our vehicles, and the continued and varied innovations of our distributors.

As far as production is concerned, in order to establish a business model that improves mini vehicle profits, we have carried out structural reforms such as the implementation of our Simple, Slim and Compact (SSC) Concept at production plants, as well as an overhaul of our procurement process. These changes have enabled us to manufacture mini vehicles that are appropriately fuel-efficient, affordable and eco-friendly. Moreover, we have worked hard to realize a safety-oriented and diverse line-up, and take care to comprehensively pursue car manufacturing from a customer viewpoint.

From a sales perspective, our decision to engage in more community-based sales activities has led to improved communications with our customers. This in turn has led to customer opinion being reflected in our vehicle development. The needs of our Japanese customers change at a rapid pace; for this reason, it is our goal to anticipate these changes and, at the same time, continue to be a leading manufacturer of compact cars that stimulates change of its own accord.

The No.1 share of the domestic mini vehicle market for 11 years in a row (FY2007–FY2017)

Daihatsu has secured the leading share of the mini vehicle market, which accounts for approximately 30 percent of the Japanese automobile market, for 11 years in succession. Our rich line-up caters to the needs of diverse customers, and our unique e:S technologies—which aim to realize fuel efficiency and affordable pricing—have made a significant contribution to our success.
